The history of Allan Greenwood

Family owned and operates business Allan Greenwood Haulage was first established in 1967 by Allan Greenwood. Allan’s wife Ann was the business secretary, frequently handling book keeping, accounts and haulage requests. In 1979 Allan was joined his daughter, Sheridan, who started her career in the transport industry as a driver for her father’s company. Next Sheridan’s husband Pete joined the family business in 1985 as a Business Partner, and then their son Gavin in 2000.

The company has maintained successful working partnerships with both national and local organisations and are frequently building new professional working relationships, which has allowed for business growth now employing additional drivers from outside the family unit who are valued members of the team.

In more recent years Allan has taken a more relaxed role within the business as he has reached the age of Seventy Eight, he still enjoys driving and delivering when required and proudly still holds his class 1 HGV licence.

The business operates through the entire UK, with is days consisting of working in different cities on a daily and weekly basis. The majority of Allan Greenwood Haulage’s work is through contracts, however the company frequently receives new requests for delivery or collections.

Allan Greenwood Haulage is a specialist in general haulage, this has led to the business handling a wide range of goods such as: homewares, car parts and accessories, packaging, machinery and blades. The company has the capacity to carry almost any goods that its customer requires.

Sheridan has since assumed the role of Transport Manager, she additionally continues to drive HGV for the company when required. Commenting on her role, Sheridan said, “This is a challenging role but at the same time is also very rewarding. My role is very varied, I am the first point of contact with customers old and new, drivers report directly to myself and another responsibility of mine is to complete all necessary paperwork, invoicing and accounts, whilst also arranging everyday logistics for the business.”

Allan Greenwood Haulage is an active member of the Peninsula Business Services, who ensure that it is maintaining high standards and are adhering to everyday employment needs of its drivers.

Currently the company operates a fleet of Seven Mercedes manufactured vehicles. It consist of three articulated actros vehicles, two sprinter flatbed pickups, Two rigid 6 wheeler curtain sider and one 7.5 tonne curtain sider. Additionally the company has four curtain sider trailers and one double deck curtain sider trailer. Allan Greenwood Haulage also has a Moffett Mounted Fork Lift truck.

All its fleet is fitted with a tracking device that allows the company to locate where they are and also support them should there be any unforeseen traffic delays. Its vehicles also have cameras fitted which assists its drivers on a daily basis and also supports Sheridan as the transport manager.

Allan Greenwood Haulage uses a variety of regular local and national sub-contractors and are registered as sub-contractors for them. The business has a very good working relationship with all its sub-contractors. The company collaborates alongside its sub-contractors to ensure that the customers’ needs are always met to the best of its ability and the best price.

When the recession hit in 2008 Allan Greenwood Haulage managed to sustain through loyalty from its customers, the dedication from all its team and all of the hard work during the downturn. The company believes that the excellent service it has provided its customers has ensured that they continue to use the business- even through a difficult economic climate.

Post-recession Allan Greenwood Haulage is thriving having acquired new contractual haulage which has enhanced business growth, particularly in the last twelve months. The business prides itself on the appearance of its fleet and has recently purchased another new vehicle to aid the high standard of its vehicles.

At present the company aims to continue operating as efficiently as possible, as a specialist in providing a great service with its customer’s needs being paramount to everything that the company does. This has proven to be the key to its success in a very competitive industry.
